Darkspot: Support

Light pollution map and tonight's sky score.

How accurate is the darkness reading?

Typically within about one Bortle class. It is a model built from satellite data, so local light such as porch lights and parking lots is not in it. Look at the sky when you get there; it can differ from the map.

Why only the US?

Version 1 covers the contiguous United States. Tonight's moon, darkness window and clouds work anywhere.

I denied location access

Darkspot still works. Search for any place and use it the same way.

What is red mode?

One tap on the red eye turns every screen deep red, with no white or blue light, so your eyes stay adapted to the dark.

How do alerts work?

Great-night alerts are optional and computed on your phone for the places you choose. They are local notifications; no server is involved.

Where does the data come from?

Darkness is modelled from NASA Black Marble (VNP46A4, 2025) and validated against the National Park Service Night Skies program measurements. Cloud cover comes from Apple Weather, and drive times and place search from Apple Maps.
